When something goes wrong

The messages below are the ones Cofre Ink shows, word for word, with what each one means and what to do. Problems with installing or running a server of your own are in Install with Docker.

In this mode one tab at a time holds the database, so that no write is lost. A second tab shows this message instead of an empty database.

  1. Go back to the tab that is already open, or close it.
  2. Press Try again here.

This line appears at the top of every screen when the browser would not let anything be written to disk. It can be a private window, or a browser without the kind of storage Cofre Ink needs. Everything written in that tab goes away when the tab closes.

  1. If you wrote something you want to keep, open Settings, Data and press Save under Save a copy before closing the tab, once for each space you wrote in.
  2. Open app.cofre.ink in an ordinary window of a current browser.
  3. Start there, then on the Data screen press Choose a file under Bring it back and pick the file you saved.

This usually means the browser is blocking storage for the site. Leave the private window, or allow site data for the address in your browser settings. The button Choose again where the data lives takes you back to the first screen.

Everything is gone after clearing browsing data

Section titled “Everything is gone after clearing browsing data”

In this mode the database is the storage of the site. Clearing the site data erases it, and there is no copy anywhere else, because nothing was ever sent anywhere. The only way back is a file you saved yourself: on the Data screen, Bring it back reads it.

To be ready for it, save a copy regularly. The Data screen shows Last copy saved with the date, or Never. See Backup and restore.

Cofre Ink keeps a copy of itself so that it opens with no connection. With a connection, the page is asked from the network first, and the kept copy is used only when the network does not answer. So an old version usually means the page opened with no connection.

  1. Check that you are online, then reload the page, or close the tab and open it again.
  2. Do not clear the site data to force it: in this mode that also erases your database. If you ever must, save a copy of each space first.

This happens only when you publish the browser version on a host of your own and the host does not know the app’s addresses. The build carries a 404.html that is the app itself, and most hosts send it. If yours does not, point every address that is not a file at index.html.

The sign in screen appears instead of your data

Section titled “The sign in screen appears instead of your data”

Cofre Ink shows the sign in screen, with On the server and the address under the title, whenever it cannot open a session there: you are signed out, the server is off, the address is wrong or there is no connection. When you try to sign in and the server does not answer, the screen says I could not reach followed by the address, then Check that the server is up and that the address is right.

  1. Check that you are online and that the server is running.
  2. Check the address. A server that speaks plain HTTP needs http:// at the start: an address typed without it is tried with https://.

I would rather keep it on this device leaves the server and opens a database in this browser instead. What is on the server stays there.

The screen says this for a wrong email or password, and also whenever the server refuses for another reason. One of them is too many sign in attempts in the last minute (the server allows five): wait a minute and try again.

If you are sure of the password, check the address you opened the interface at. The server accepts a sign in only from the addresses it was set up with. Opened at any other address (app.cofre.ink with a server at home, or the server reached from a phone by an address it was not given), signing in can fail with this message or with I could not reach, or seem to work and bring the sign in screen back. Those addresses are set on the server, as explained in Install with Docker.

There is no password reset in Cofre Ink, and it never sends email.

On a server, the personal space created at your first sign in starts with no categories. Open Settings, Categories and press Use the starting set.

Invitations live on the server of whoever sent them. Connect this browser to that server (A server of mine, with the same address), sign in, and open the link again. In browser mode the Members screen of a shared space says Inviting needs a server for the same reason. See Members and invitations.

Hiding covers amounts shown as figures, not amounts written inside sentences. See Finding your way.

Press PT EN in the header, and the choice is kept in this browser. A link from this site can also set it. Otherwise, until you choose, the language follows the time zone of your device, as Finding your way explains. Names created earlier, such as the starting categories, keep the language they were created in.

The messages of the sync section, and what each one means, are in A copy elsewhere, and a second device.

The repository keeps its own troubleshooting guide, written alongside the code, which goes into more cases than this page. Whoever you ask for help, never send a backup or a statement: they are your money, in full.
